Moving to a new home comes with a unique set of issues and potential headaches, from fulfilling governmental requirements to simply figuring out which removalists to hire. But one of the major activities that most people struggle with is one that seems deceptively simple: packing up one’s belongings. That’s because a lot of folks tend to accumulate so much stuff that it can be a challenge to get everything sorted and stored away in boxes before changing addresses. This is why it’s important to do some decluttering once you’ve decided that it’s time to move to a different residence.

Start early and create your game plan

    • Don’t procrastinate for one second and get started as early as possible, especially if you own a lot of things. You’ll save yourself from feeling the pressure of making last-minute decisions if you begin planning your move months ahead of schedule.
    • Go room by room and start with the areas you use the least, like the attic, garage, or guest room, then work your way to more frequently used spaces like your bedroom and kitchen. By tackling one room at a time, the process will feel more manageable, and you’ll be able to see the progress you’re making, which can be a great motivating feeling.
    • Schedule specific time slots each week for you to declutter and prioritise these events, like important appointments, so you can stay on track.

Use a sorting system to help you organise your work

As you go through the contents of each room, use a simple system like the four-box method to help keep things organised. Put a label on each box to clearly identify what you intend to do with the items inside them.

    • Keep things that you use regularly along with objects of special sentimental value.
    • Donate any items that are in good condition but you don’t intend to use anymore.
    • Sell the things that are of value so you can get some cash back into your pocket.
    • Recycle any items that are no longer useful, or throw them away if they can no longer be reused.

    Target specific categories of objects

    • Clothes: Go through your closet and drawers then get rid of anything that no longer fits you or is worn out. Fill out just one suitcase with the clothing items that you’ll need for your first week in your new home and pack the rest of your stuff into boxes.
    • Paperwork: Old and unnecessary documents like letters and bills should be shredded or thrown away.
    • Electronics: Get rid of your old electronics like phones and other gadgets along with unused cords and chargers. Find a recycling spot that accepts these old electronics so you can safely dispose of these items.
    • Books: Books can significantly increase your moving costs because they’re heavy and take up too much space. Pick only your favourites and donate or sell the others in your library.
    • Kitchen items: Get rid of duplicate objects, mismatched containers, and expired food or spices.

Decluttering can be both physically and emotionally draining, so don’t forget to give yourself a little reward after you complete each milestone of your plan. Once you’re done with all your sorting, contact the White Glove Mover so we can help you settle into your new home without any worries.
